Iceland
In May 2004, I flew to 64° North for a rendevous with a dozen outdoor journalists and editors in Iceland. With 24 hours of light, we had plenty of time to discuss fabric technologies with associates from W. L. Gore (the maker of Gore-Tex, WindStopper, and other ePTFE products). Our cadre also tested products, sampled Icelandic cuisine, and debunked the myth that Iceland has abundant beautiful women. This 6-day trip was also the first opportunity to test my new digital camera system! Now that the technology has ripened, I'm selling off my 35mm film equipment (still keeping the medium and larger formats) and switching to professional digital SLR gear. For an outdoor and travel photographer, the Olympus E-1 camera and lenses (11-22 mm, 14-54 mm, and 50-200 mm) are a superb blend of high quality and performance. The system is lighter and smaller than other pro grear, better protected against water and dust, and has a superior feel. Most of all, the E-1 system delivers great images! The following 75 images represent my first attempts in this new digital darkroom. Unlike slide film, digital film requires much more post-shoot work by the photographer. To open a window with a 600 x 450 pixel version of an image, click on the larger thumbnail.
