In the summer and fall of 2000, I ran a few of Colorado's major mountain races. I'd been a trail runner for years, partly due to insistent dogs, but had never been in a running race or beyond ten miles. My string of aerobic events started with an expedition in Nepal. Lean and fit upon return, I ran the trail races here and several road biking events: the Elephant Rock 100-mile, Mt. Evans Hill Climb (28 miles, 7000+ feet) and the Triple By Pass (120 miles, 10,000+ feet). And I finished off with the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC where I grew up. Some of the inspriation for this big mileage comes from my love of outdoor sports. Some results from my having founded Trail Runner magazine in 1998. And some came from turning 40 that summer.
